Quick answer

How do I know if I need a new furnace?

It may be time to replace your furnace if it’s 15 years or older, needs repairs more than once a season, struggles to keep rooms warm, or your heating bills keep climbing. A new high-efficiency furnace can turn 95% or more of its fuel into heat, compared with 80% or less for many older models. We’ll inspect your system and tell you honestly whether a repair or a replacement makes more sense.

Repair or Replace?

Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Furnace

Not sure whether to repair or replace? These are the most common reasons homeowners decide it’s time for a new furnace.

01

It’s 15 years or older

Most furnaces last about 15 to 20 years. As they age, efficiency drops and parts become harder to find.

02

Repairs keep adding up

If you’re calling for repairs every winter, or facing a major repair, that money is often better spent on a new furnace.

03

Heating bills are rising

An older furnace has to run longer to heat your home. A new high-efficiency model can heat it for less.

04

Uneven or weak heat

Cold rooms, a furnace that runs constantly or one that can’t keep up on the coldest days are signs it’s no longer the right fit.

05

Strange noises or smells

Banging, rattling, squealing or a burning smell mean something needs attention right away.

06

Yellow flame or soot

A gas furnace burner should burn blue. A yellow flame, soot or a carbon monoxide alarm is a safety issue. Call a professional.

Compare Options

Furnace or Heat Pump?

Replacing your furnace is a good time to look at all your options. We’ll help you compare them for your home and budget.

High-efficiency furnace

Gas and propane furnaces with up to 95%+ AFUE deliver strong, steady heat on the coldest New England nights and work with your existing ductwork.

Best for: Homes with gas service and ductwork that want dependable, powerful heat.

Cold-climate heat pump

A ducted heat pump replaces both your furnace and central air conditioner with one efficient system that heats and cools.

Best for: Homes that want one system for both seasons and may qualify for heat pump rebates.

Learn about heat pumps

Hybrid (dual-fuel) system

Pair a heat pump with a furnace. The heat pump handles most of the year, and the furnace takes over on the coldest days.

Best for: Homeowners who want heat pump efficiency with furnace backup.

Very nice, professional, helpful and a great price! We converted from an old steam radiator by oil system to gas HVAC and Wrightway did a great job. Doug, the owner, is a great guy. He worked to carefully plan out the ductwork. He is very knowledgable and careful and responsive. Thank you.

FAQ

Furnace Questions

How long does a furnace last?

Most furnaces last about 15 to 20 years with regular maintenance. Installation quality, sizing and annual service all affect lifespan. If yours is 15 years or older and needs a costly repair, replacement is often the better value.

Should I repair or replace my furnace?

Repair usually makes sense if your furnace is relatively new and the fix is minor. If it’s older, breaks down often or needs a major repair such as a heat exchanger, replacement is usually the smarter long-term choice. We’ll give you an honest recommendation either way.

What does AFUE mean?

AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is the percentage of fuel a furnace turns into heat for your home. A 95% AFUE furnace turns 95 cents of every fuel dollar into heat, while many older furnaces are 80% AFUE or lower.

How long does furnace replacement take?

Many straightforward furnace replacements can be completed in about a day. Projects that involve ductwork changes, venting updates or a fuel conversion may take longer. We’ll give you a timeline with your estimate.

Are there rebates for a new furnace?

In New Hampshire, Liberty and Unitil natural gas customers may qualify for NHSaves rebates on high-efficiency furnaces. In Massachusetts, Mass Save no longer offers rebates on new gas furnaces except for income-eligible households, but heat pumps may qualify for rebates. See our rebates and incentives page for details.

Will Wrightway beat a competitor’s furnace quote?

Yes. With our Wright Price Guarantee, share a written quote from a licensed contractor for comparable work before you sign, and we’ll beat it by 10%.

How often should my furnace be serviced?

Once a year, ideally in the fall before heating season. Our maintenance plans include a Fall Furnace or Air Handler 20-Point Inspection along with member discounts on repairs.
